DAWOSC PC App

Post  DonGateley on Fri Mar 15, 2013 7:05 pm

There are no apps for Windows I can find that allow creation of custom OSC control services that can be operated from Windows itself. I have a complex Plogue Bidule audio filtering patch to process sound on a PC that I would rather the user not have to look at but I would like him to be able to control it with a simpler interface without requiring an external device.

To that end I would love to have a version of the DAWOSC app for the PC that can use layouts that are created by the editor and operated with the mouse. One might be able to kludge that up, I suppose, with the BlueStacks android environment that runs on windows but a more direct app would be most excellent.

Hey Don

Thanks for the idea!

That's actually a planned feature for editor. It'll be a screen in the editor that lets you 'play' the controllers on your PC. The problem is that I won't have that done for a few months. In the meantime, you can try this:

Wow, that was quick. Glad to hear your plan. Great for development but not so great for deployment. Since you pointed at Surface Editor I see that you understand what I would like to see for a stand alone DAWOSC compatible PC app. Any chance?

Sorry, I should have elaborated more! Once that test screen in the editor is built, it'll be easy to turn it into it's own program.

But I just thought of something...are you actually talking the new Windows 8 apps? That's something I'm definitely going to look into now that PC touchscreens are becoming more popular and cheap.

Yes. Two things come to mind. First it should be possible to start the program in the operational mode, hiding the editor for users that would just want to use the surface to control something. Second, in the operational mode it should mimic the Android app so that someone using it on a PC would see the same M.O. as on an Android.

No, I'm still a Windows 7 user and don't plan on changing that but I can see where the touch integration in 8 would appeal to you for tablets. I really don't want to be touching my laptop/desktop screens and prefer a mouse in those environments. Personally I don't think the future of Windows 8 tablets or phones is very bright. I think Sinofsky drank his own cool-aid with that effort.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll keep them in mind when I start working on it. Smile

I like Surface Editor a lot and use a version with some custom made changes on stage.
The only downside is that is not developed anymore and there is no support.
But if you run into problem and the quite good documentation does not help you
feel free to send me a PM with your question.

As you are using bidule and should be quite familiar with modular stuff you could
also try Usine which is still 'alive' - http://www.sensomusic.com/usine/

Thanks, I installed Surface Editor and gave it a look. It seems very capable yet very complicated and I found the manual to presume a lot of understanding I don't have. I may give it another look eventually but I will stay with DAWOSC for now. The eventual ability to operate it from either the PC or Android appeals to me greatly.

I'll definitely give Usine a look. I've been unable so far to get Bidule to receive DAWOSC messages and the support forums, especially Seb, have an odd and not terribly palatable attitude.

Thanks again.
