Latency Question

Post  The Lion on Wed May 01, 2013 7:18 am

Hi.

This is not a bug as such but just a query.

I have noticed that there is just a little bit of latency when using DAWOSC. I am using it to send midi to FL Studio to trigger pads in its new performance mode and that little delay is noticeable and can throw your timing off. It isn't really a problem controlling Cubase mixers etc.

Is there anything I can do to improve the latency. I know nothing about OSC and I don't know if FL Studio can receive OSC but if it could would that maybe improve it?

I have tried quite a few other Android control apps and I have found that those that use Bluetooth don't seem to have any latency at all. Would that be something that you could consider? Some way to get DAWOSC to use Bluetooth as an alternative to wifi?

Other than that - thanks for a great app!

Hi!

Glad you like the app Smile

As for the latency issue, I plan on creating my own client that will run on your computer (PC and Mac). By creating my own client, I can add a whole bunch of new functions and features. And I'll address the latency issue at the same time. At this point, I don't know if I'll use Bluetooth or something else, but the latency will be reduced Smile All I have to do first is buy a Mac! lol!! I THINK that'll happen mid-summer...maybe...

I'm also going to be releasing a new version very soon, hopefully within a week. This new version is a little faster (and a lot of new features), so that that might make the latency feel shorter.

Thanks for your quick reply!

I am looking forward to the update. It's great that you really care about your users.

I don't have a Mac myself (and never will) so the way you are developing suits me just fine!

Cheers!

Thanks!

Yeah, all the features that are going into DAWOSC are features that users have requested. So DAWOSC is really an app that's designed by the users, which makes things pretty cool Smile

And here's the list of features for the next update:

controllers now have min/max OSC values
controllers now have min/max MIDI values
controllers (or parts of them) can be transparent
controllers can work in reverse
DAWOSC now holds 20 layouts
ability to not send Button OFF commands
layouts can have a background color
x,y touch offset in Preferences
font size offset in Preferences
new Layout Lists load up to 20 layouts at once
controllers can display all incoming OSC and/or MIDI messages for troubleshooting purposes
ability to batch-update layouts in editor
ability to edit controllers in excel-type screen in editor
cells in monomes can have different prefixes
new sample template (when no layouts are loaded)
controllers are able to display their MIDI values
controllers are able to display their OSC values
Android menu shows layout name
ability to change OSC In and OUT ports
improved easier-to-use editor
many bug fixes

Hey Mark(is it Mark?) I'm guessing cause I've seen your thread on KVR.
Anyway , good stuff , digging it so far. Can't wait for future releases!
A few questions though -
-Is it possible to create an encoder ? I think not , but I've seen a print screen of a layout that has a jog wheel in it somewhere around here. If not , will it be added?
-same as the above question for a crossfader ?

Also not sure whether its a bug or just a poor connection outcome but on occasion , momentary buttons won't send a note off massage , say I use a button to trigger a beat repeat effect and it stays on regardless that its not pressed. Your thoughts ?

Thanks.

Glad you're liking the app Smile

Right now, it's not possible to create an encoder, but what I do is use a pan knob as a Jog shuttle. It works exactly like an encoder (at least in Cubase!)

I will be adding an encoder and crossfader soon. I can't say when becuase we're moving to a new house soon, so I'll be busy with that. But I'd say early June.

As for the button issue, it's probably a bug in the current version. The new version works much better Smile

Hi elvyn,
I guess you are using Ableton Live's Beat Repeat ?
Ableton kind of assumes that you want to permanently switch on/off a device.
To achieve this it only reacts to Note On commands and ignores the Note Off.
It should be switched off when sending the next Note On (pressing the momentary
button a second time). Try mapping the Beat Repeat switch to momentary button
sending MIDI CC instead of a note - that should work if I remember right...

Yep... only workaround I found so far for triggering buttons like beat repeat in Live.
Thanks for responding Smile
