Wireless LAN + double function for buttons

Post  jopie_kaaskop on Fri Feb 01, 2013 7:25 am

Hi, started using the app. this week. Very nice.
So far I got the remote control functions running for tracking in the RME UFX totalmixfx!

I am not really a computer buff so may have some kind of basic questions.
Q1: do I always need to have an external wireless router running to connect my Android tablet (with DAWosc) to the PC (running totalmixfx) or can this be done direct (without the router. I tried but did not really work..
Q2: Is it possible to have one button execute 2 OSC commands (start recording in 2 paralel running DAW's) at the same time. In my case Totalmixfx & Reaper.

Thanks in advance for the reply.

Hi Henk

Glad you're enjoying the app!

Yes, the router is always required. The router lets your tablet and your PC "see" and "talk" to each other.

Right now, a button cannot send 2 OSC commands, but I'll add it to the list of features that I'll be adding Smile

Really, a router is always required ?!?!
Is it an Android thing ? With iOS devices you can create an ad-hoc network with your PC.
Response via ad-hoc ist much faster than when using a router.

I can't think of how common it is to need several OSC or MIDI commands on one button.
Guess the challenge would not be to program that, but to find a smart way to organise
SEVERAL commands (when you allow 2 someone will ask for 3...) in the editor GUI.

Surface Editor gives you several commands by stacking buttons. When pushing the button you
see all buttons placed beneath it are triggered, too. This requires some kind of layer/priority
setting for controllers, but I think that's on the list anyway, right ?

Allowing several commands for one controller is more elegant, I don't know if it's worth the work...

Actually, you're right, you can create an ad-hoc network without a router. I've never had to do that. It's got nothing to do with androids, it's just a networking thing.

I think I'd prefer to have buttons send multiple commands, that way you can define the commands easily and in what order that they get sent in. And like you said, it's more elegant to use one button with multiple commands.

Well, thanks for the replies..I guess I have to investigate now how to make an ad-hoc network using PC and tablet Smile
If anyone knows? That would be great.

The reason for asking 2 commands in one button lies in the fact that I use RME UFX totalmixFX AND rReaper at the same time for tracking (location recording).
So to start stop it would be great just to have to push one button to stop/start both a the same time..

mr Kaaskop,

my laptop is equiped with an Intel wireless adapter and that came with microsoft software called "Intel(R) My Wifi Technology". If you also have an intel adaptor, you might find this software under control panel -> network and internet -> Intel(R) My Wifi Technology.

Open this program, go to profiles -> new -> give it a name, some security settings and you're done. Enable your new profile and now your android device will be able to connect to it.

If you have an intel adaptor, but not the program, go here: http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/mywf/sb/CS-030009.htm#?iid=subhdr+dnlds

If you don't have an intel adaptor, use a free program called "connectify" see here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=jPgrAOuiWuk#!

and get that program here: http://www.connectify.me/hotspot/?utm_expid=22708698-14&utm_referrer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.connectify.me%2F

Good luck!

I prefer simple command line scripts. Have a look here, should work with win 7 as well.
http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-set-up-wireless-ad-hoc-internet-connection-in-windows-8/
You have to create an infrastructure wlan with you PC to talk with android devices.

Thanks for the suggestion. I guess several ways may be possible. I finally got it working now with a program called "connectify".
Makes the laptop into a "hotspot" the tablet logs onto this and works fine sofar! Now need to finalize my layout to control both RME UFX and Reaper transport control in one screen!
